Coloring in Pembroke Welsh Corgis

Coat color genetics in corgis is much like inheritance of blue eyes or freckles in humans.  Though coat color inheritance is not an important factor in breeding, it's very interesting to see how coloring gets passed from parents to puppies.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes several basic coat colors:

  • Red

  • Sable

  • Fawn

  • Black & Tan (with or without White Markings) aka Tricolor

    • Red Head Tri

    • Black Head Tri

Fawn coat color is a very light version of Red.

Red is dominant to Tricolor factor, and Red Head Tricolor

is dominant to Black Head Tricolor factor.

Sable is a coat color somewhere in between Reds and Tricolors,

where most appear to be Red with Black Head Trifactor.

Other color variations include lighter cream markings on the eyebrows

& cheeks.  Bluies, Whitelies, and Mismarks are considered serious faults

in the Pembroke Standards (more information can be found at

Pembroke Welsh Corgi Dog Breed Information (akc.org)).

A few examples of offspring coat color based on parent genetics:
